OEM Acura Belts

Your Acura vehicle has three types of belts: serpentine, drive, and timing. They help move its many parts, much like hoses do.

The serpentine belt works with a crank pulley, an idler pulley, and a tensioner to help run several systems -- among them, the alternator and power steering. Drive belts run off the crank pulley and pass through and help run the water pump, radiator fan, and other systems. They're also called V-belts. The timing belt makes sure the crankshaft and camshaft run in sync and helps keep auto parts from colliding with one another. If you drive a newer Acura model, it may have a timing chain for this instead.

Know When to Replace Your Vehicle's Belts

None of these belts lasts indefinitely, unfortunately. They sometimes go bad from use and age. Luckily, there are signs that'll tell you that's happening, at which point, you should change the belts.

For instance, your serpentine belt may begin to crack and develop shallow groove depths. About every 60,000 miles, use a belt-wear gauge to inspect it. Replace it, however, about every 90,000 miles. Your drive belts, on the other hand, may begin to loosen, if they aren't already too tight. First, try to adjust them as needed. If a V-belt is too loose and can't otherwise be tightened, however, or if the belt has cracked or begun squealing, you may need to change it. The same goes for if you're having alternator or engine overheat problems. Your timing belt, however, you should replace if it shows damage. Otherwise, be sure to change it approximately every 60,000 to 90,000 miles. Timing chains, though, should last an engine's lifetime.
